Retreat

image

To retreat is to withdraw
A choice by design or flaw
A decision to change course
To regroup and reinforce
Seclude from the enemy’s face
If only for a moment of grace
To find men accountable
And achieve the insurmountable
To offer compassion and encouragement
For the body and soul’s nourishment
And charge the battlefield that overwhelms
Among the spiritual and physical realms
With courage and conviction to stand
We are held in Christ’s hand
In His presence no fear in death
His name resonates as our battle cry with every breath
We are mere shadows of God’s glory
Commissioned to share His story
To retreat is not to surrender
The Word is our eternal defender
Sharper than any sword we can wield
It pierces the heart that will not yield
We are called to his ranks individual of each other
But under our King we serve as brothers
Knit together by a common thread
A belief in our Savior who rose from the dead
A retreat is no place for man’s pride
It is a place of humility, of tears and for hearts to confide
To remind us of our weakness apart from He
Who is the author of creation and eternity
A place for His message to renew our Spirit
And go forth like the twelve for the world to hear it!

A Dream

image

Clouds adrift
Like schools of fish
Pass by in the cool morning air
Leaving wind blown strands of silver hair
Or wispy bits of cotton candy spun
Against a canvas of midnight blue undone
Still enamored by the moon’s light
It tempestuously envelops each night
As I fall under its’ trance
To unlock my imagination and watch it dance
Until the spell weakens and loses power
As the clock turns and chimes in the early morning hour
And from the bed I rise with curiosity
To discover a strange yet familiar luminosity
That allures me before I am startled by an interrupting breeze
My body shivers like the rustling leaves of the trees
That I gaze upon in amazement to find my shadow cast there
But I am here among the clouds on a journey though uncertain where
I am awake and asleep or so it seems
Heaven waits at the end of this life I dream.

Not Our Own

image

Foolish words of arrogance
Boast of our significance
We deem our worth
By what we put forth
And then crave more
To fill our selfish core
We should have what we perceive
But entitlement does deceive
Like scales over our eyes
Enveloped in a web of lies
We are not our own
Our seed of talent was sown
From the Creator above
And is nurtured with love
By the hands of those who care
With whom this life is shared
For though a seed is planted
Maturity is not granted
Interdependence is required
To achieve the goal desired
Family, a teacher, coach or friend
Provide the support we need to transcend
From a sapling so weak and frail
To a mighty oak that will prevail
And endure through all of life’s season
Uniquely made for God’s own reason.

Reflection

Old Mirror Standing Against Wall

Our image
In a photograph
Or before a mirror
Is a reflection
But draw nearer
Past our perception
One must delve
To discover oneself
It is not found
In the image
The mirror rebounds

Look into the eyes
And listen to the voice
That echoes the heart’s song
That has been sung
Is singing
But remains to be heard
Not in words
A deeper connection
Past the physical reflection
Of our image

We try to manipulate
And distort
We starve for attention
And affection
From our reflection
To appeal
But of true self conceal
Do not be deceived
In the fondness received
Hidden in intimate distraction
To fulfill another’s lustful attraction

Physical beauty is fleeting
Evident in the recurrent meeting
Of the mirror in which we stare
Longing to be the muse
Of he or she who would not abuse
The body we are given
To live in
A mere costume
When we are rid of no one will exhume

Look nearer
Into the mirror
The image cast forth
Does not reveal our worth
It is but a shallow reflection
That lacks depth and introspection
Look through the lens
Past the shades of brown, blue or green
To discover that which is unseen
The soul, it is the exception
Upon reflection
Bears a likeness to God
And falls under His authority
Created with purest intent
And timeless beauty
We glimpse eternity
When we look nearer
Past the reflections in the mirror.

A Scar’s Remnant

image

A scar lingers
Unseen
But easily found
By a finger’s touch
Fists clutch
In fear
Of a past memory
Hidden
In a frame
That bore the pain
Unwanted
Unable to defend
Against the hand
That inflicted the wound
And left a scar
That remains
Healed
But no less felt
In the arms
Of one who would not harm
A love unconditional
To overcome
The hurt
From the past
The Spirit will outlast
And redeem
The one
Who bears the scar unseen.

To be loved is our desire
To give love is to inspire
Love does not seek fault
Love is not to remain in a vault
Love is for the human race
Love is never second place
To lose someone you love is pain
To meet someone you love is gain
Love is sincere
Love pushes away fear
Love is never incorrect
Love always shows respect
To love your enemy is the exception
To love yourself is the deception
Love is in wedding bell chimes
Love endures the hard times
From His love you never depart
In love you unlock the heart
Love will risk uncertainty
Love will be for eternity!

Perspective

image

If only to give
A different perspective
To uncover
The unseen
That always was
Will always be
Not new
Except to you
To reveal
How to feel
In dimension
Not condescension
To expand
Help understand
Discard label
Sit at the table
Together
Not separate
Let go of hate
Don’t incite
Be light
To find
Mankind
Is equal
No sequel
To Civil war
Recognition
Of disposition
Share the burden
A world hurting
Racial divide
Worlds collide
The only race
Is human
If you live
From this perspective.

Who deems one belief greater than another?
That we would inflict pain upon each other
Under the pretense it is right
To take up arms and fight
And upon others force our views
Because they are unwilling to choose
To respect what to one is sacred
Should not spur another’s hatred
The selfishness rampant in humanity
Triggers in others such insanity
Might we look through the eyes of a child?
And find a heart that is meek and mild
That does not look for a label
But to be willing and able
To look at another’s life
And not wish to induce pain or strife
Because to whom they pray is not the same
And the book they read has a different name
Peace is not an illusion
If we could all come to the conclusion
That we differ in race, color and creed
But of our distinctness might we heed
Value and appreciate the mystique
Of our cultures, each one unique
And each deserving of a voice
But not by force, only by choice
For there is greater worth in being preferred
Than acts of violence against if ignored
There is room for us all in this place
But to each other we must show grace
And acknowledge each other’s convictions
With respect, not intent on eradication
Our present condition echoes from history’s pages
Amid acts of terror and the religious persecution that rages
For each has sought to have absolute power
To strike fear and cause man to cower
But it is not the place of man
To kill and harm, how to comprehend?
The needless death and destruction
Is not any god’s instruction
Mankind’s purpose is to learn and grow
And by example to other’s show
The fruits of labor in their faithfulness
Marked with acts of righteousness
And let each give praise with their breath
In so much as it does not bring death
For instead of manipulation and gain
Might a richer knowledge we attain
A greater respect and acceptance exude
And find harmony in our brief interlude
Between birth and death, let us live
And of the beauty that abounds, freely give
Of our individual circumstance
In a world knit with such intricate balance
Might we tip the scales of humility?
To foster a life of tranquility
Absent of the thief
That is pride in a belief
And blindly corrupts the existence
Of the opportunity for a life of innocence.
